Table as Landscape

Product Design

Using Turnstone’s new Bassline Table as a platform for experimentation, I explored the physical attributes of this mutable table. Guided by the table’s designer Markus McKenna, Global Design Director, Seating, Turnstone and Professor Josh Owen,
Chair of Industrial Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Concept

In today’s world, people are constantly on the run. Finding time to disconnect to find a moment of tranquility can be a challenge.
The relaxation we seek is often connected with quietness, emptiness, scents, or certain rituals. Fractals are seen in art and nature,
and they have been proved to induce relaxation. The reason they reduce stress is a physical resonance that happens when the fractal structure of the human eye matches the fractal of the image
being viewed.

User Experience

The purpose of my design to allow users to become immersed in an experience of ambiguity and curiosity. With my design, the user
is encouraged to move the glass vessel across the surface of the table and observe all the different patterns occurring inside the dish,
when the magnetic filings are influenced by the hidden magnetic forces embedded in the table surface.
